It won a match. The brain was thinking too slowly — eight copies voting took twice as long as a game frame, so the fly acted two frames late. Running two copies put it back in real time, and it won its first fight, two rounds to none.

Two fly brains signal to each other. One copy of the brain sees a threat and its wings sing. A second copy hears it through its own ears, and with the finest time steps it reacts 77.5% of the time, against 17.5% in silence. See the experiment and the feed.

Smell reaches the brain. The smell neurons were exciting each other into a runaway loop that drowned out every odour. With that fixed, a food smell drives the fly's own odour relay neurons.
